Goa Carnival

This March is introducing the most eagerly awaited event of the year “Goa
Carnival”. One of the most colorful and fanciful festival of Goa. The festival
elaborates for three days of fun, amusement, playful, musical and merry making.
Basically the three day festival is celebrated by christens however all the
population of Goa irrespective of religion, belief, communities and faith enjoy the
festival. The event is a sparkling procession of decoration, graceful dance, non
stop music, group performance, strumming musical instruments and fun festivity.

The carnival was introduced by Portuguese who ruled over Goa for
approximately five hundred years. The word ‘Carnival’ has been derived from
Latin word ‘Carnavale’ meaning ‘to take away meat’ which means throw away
meat. If throw light on the Goa Carnival is to have happiness involving in any sort
of fun i.e. singing, dancing and feasting etc., before the 40 day abstinence period
of Lent before Easter. Just before Easter Sunday, all Goan celebrate the carnival
as the merry making time. Carnival refers a complete holiday dedicated to fun
and enjoy as it is a break from the daily routine and keeping away the stress of
the every-day life.

The root of the festival can be stressed to the Rome and Greece. The carnival
was celebrated in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies, and gradually became
known for their singing, dancing and drinking. King Momo has started Goa
Carnival just before the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday until Easter observed
by Christians as a season of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter
season of the christen calendar. According to Christianity, the 40 days of fasting
and self mortification before the Easter Sunday meant to purify one's soul. King
Momo presides over the festival and orders subject to party indulging from
morning to night in organizing street play, singing, dancing and feasting in the
open street of entire Goa.

Goa is one of the famous tourist destinations in India. The Carnival is gaining
popularity and there is increment in number of tourist visiting the Goa festival.
Though it was celebrated by the local population of Goa, it has crossed the state
and country boundaries as it attracts thousands of tourist across the world. The
festival has brought the best of the vibrant culture of Goa. The Goa Carnival has
now inseparable from the Goa heritage.
